How to Stop Toxic Thoughts

Many people struggle with invasive toxic thoughts on a regular basis. But we have good news—it is possible to change the way you think. If negative messages are preventing you from growing your relationship with God, use these 5 guided meditations from Abide to grow spiritually—freeing your mind and renewing your faith.

Stop Toxic Thoughts

Perhaps, you’ve noticed that your thoughts tend to spiral out towards anxiety or negativity. Or maybe, you realized that lies are taking up space in your mind, spreading their poison. It could even be as simple as constantly worrying about what other people think, or replaying conversations in your head. When you find yourself giving in to toxic thoughts, remember this encouragement from Proverbs 4:23, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Click play and meditate with us, as you give your toxic thoughts to God.

Take Every Thought Captive

In a world with polarizing philosophies and religions, it can be really hard to figure out what’s the truth. In 2 Corinthians 10, the Apostle Paul reminds us, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” As you listen, meditate on this command, and ask God to grant you wisdom and freedom from your toxic thoughts.

Living God’s Truth

There’s no black and white in this world, but we can still discern the truth. Jesus makes it clear: Truth is accessible and knowing it is key. In John 17, Jesus says, “Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth.” As you listen to the meditation below, invite Jesus to bring the truth into your heart. The presence of God’s Word—accessible to you all the time—is a gift. Lean into this gift, and allow the truth to renew you.

Comfort for Your Soul

Where do you turn for comfort? In Psalm 94, we’re reminded that, “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” As you listen to the meditation below, think about the great God we have the privilege of knowing. Revel in the fact that although he is the almighty, he is also personal—longing to bring us his consolation and joy. God has invited us to come to him freely, regardless of what is giving us anxiety. He is our refuge; he is our strength. Breathe in this comforting message, and give your toxic thoughts and worries to God.

Your Sins Are No More

We’ve all done things we regret. The great news is that God does not keep a record of our wrongs—no matter how big our sins are. You are not chained to your sin; it doesn’t own you. You are always free from sin because Christ has set you free. Take a few moments to breathe in this truth, and as you feel your body relax, focus on God’s Word in Psalm 103: “As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” Jesus paid the price, so you can live in freedom. Do not be afraid to confess your sins to him because nothing can separate you from his love.

As you listen to these meditations, remember that you are chosen. Through Jesus, you are chosen to belong, chosen to receive mercy, and chosen to soak in God’s wonderful light. If toxic thoughts are overwhelming your heart and mind, center yourself on this truth. God calls you out of darkness and pours his mercy and grace on you. If your identity is based on who God says you are, then your past has no power over you, your future is secure, and your present is full of peace.
